6 Savvy Ways to Save Money When Moving Internationally

Moving to another country is a huge undertaking. It can be expensive just to move from one city to another within your home country. An international move might feel like it’s more than you can handle.

The good news is that it doesn’t have to cost you an arm and a leg to move to your international dream destination. Here are six ways you can save money when you move to another country.

1. Plan Your Move Six Months in Advance

Give yourself at least six months to plan your move and find the best travel deals. Airlines and hotels typically offer special discounts to customers who book their services ahead of time, so start doing your research now.

2. Use Price Comparison Websites

It can be a pain to go from website to website just so that you can compare ticket prices and room rates. In the interest of saving time and money, find a reputable price comparison website that can show you a range of competitive rates.

3. Create a Budget

If you’re committed to saving money while you travel, it’s important to have a budget. Create a spreadsheet which shows both your regular income and expenses. Next, you’ll need to create a budget for all your travel and moving expenses. Once you have firm numbers for each expense, don’t exceed those numbers.

4. Ship Your Belongings by Sea

If you’re moving a large amount of equipment or furniture, you should think about hiring an international container shipping service.

A shipping container can be pricey, so you may need to consider purchasing a “shared container.” This allows you to share a container with other customers and split the overall cost. Keep in mind, however, that if you decide on a shared container, your belongings won’t be shipped until the shipping company receives enough individual orders to fill the container.

5. Find Cheap Accommodations When You Arrive

You don’t need to stay in a five-star hotel when you first arrive in your new country. You just need a simple place that can serve as a temporary base while you go house-hunting.

If you have friends or family members who live in the new country, ask if you can crash with them for a while. If that fails, there are plenty of peer-to-peer hosting services that allow you to rent rooms or apartments from other people.

6. Find a Roommate

Living with two or more people is a great way to save money. If you’re moving into an apartment that’s already furnished, that’s even better. You won’t have to spend money shipping your own furniture.
